Ferry Objection for Swimmers:
Charities and swimmers have reacted strongly when a ferry company by name DFDS has called for stronger regulations on channel swimming. It has asked for restrictions on cross channel swimming as many people began to undertake this feat. DFDS seaways the only ferry operator who runs services on the Dover to Dunkirk route is wanting the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to oversee swims across Cross Channel. It does include the appeal for the prohibition of Channel Swimming, Piloting Federation and the Channel Swimming Association. The company's passenger director Chris Newey added, "These crossings are unregulated and they are growing at an expedient rate. We would like to see it regulated by the MCA."
Charities Criticise Ferry Operator:
Dr Julie Bradshaw, secretary of the Channel Swimming Association, said she feared that tighter regulations would not deter swimmers wishing to cross the channel. In a recent interview with BBC, she said, "I suspect that people determined to do it would swim across without registering with the coast guards and its that scenario which would be dangerous." Dr Bradshaw, who has raised thousands of pounds for charities by swimming across the Channel on numerous occasions has supported this view. The French Coastguard did not say it wanted a ban on cross-channel swims, but rather on unauthorised swims, which would be quite right. Charities, such as, Oxfam and Unicef commented on this issue and they said that it encourages any person who wants to cross the channel in aid of charity. They also called such a proposal by a ferry operator a shame. There seemed to a mixed opinions on the issue of swimmers across the British Channel but still people and enthusiastic swimmers are watching for developments with their fingers crossed.
